Ensemble Belvedere

Susan Shaw, Artistic Director

Ensemble Belvedere explores music from two rival cultural and political kingdoms in this program of instrumental works from German-speaking lands. To the south in Saxony, Electors Augustus the Strong and Frederick Augustus — both famous music lovers — sponsored concerts at the Dresden court known far and wide for their excellence. Meanwhile to their immediate north in Prussia, the flute-playing monarch King Frederick the Great—intent on demonstrating Prussian superiority—was amassing a company of world-class musicians and building an opera house in his own capital city of Berlin.  This stunning program of music by virtuoso-composers in the service of German royalty features solo and trio sonatas by J.S. Bach, Pisendel, Buffardin, Quantz, C.P.E. Bach, and Kirnberger.

Parisian Soirée - September 28, 2014, 3pm

Place: Rocky River Presbyterian, Rocky River, OH

As the most vibrant musical center of 18th-century Europe London attracted (not surprisingly) a great wave of Continental musicians seeking fame and fortune. This concert features chamber music gems by the great George Frideric Handel (who became a naturalized British subject in 1727) and his German-born colleagues John Christopher Pepusch, Carl Friedrich Abel, Johann Christian Bach — all of whom made careers for themselves among the British.  Free admission!
